Daylight saving time has once again begun and is in effect for 2024. On Sunday, March 10th, millions of clocks were set forward at 2 a.m. local time, providing Americans with more daylight in the evening.

This annual time adjustment always occurs on the second Sunday of March and concludes on the first Sunday of November.

Despite public opinion pushing lawmakers to eliminate daylight saving time due to its perceived disruption of sleep and schedules, the practice continues.

This year, daylight saving time ends just a few days after Halloween, giving us the opportunity to “fall back” and gain an extra hour of sleep.

Here’s what you need to know about the conclusion of daylight saving time in 2024:

  • When does daylight saving end in 2024?
Daylight saving time in 2024 will end on Sunday, November 3rd, at 2 a.m. local time.
  • What is daylight saving time?
Daylight saving time is the period between March and November when most Americans adjust their clocks by one hour. In March, we lose an hour to gain more daylight in the summer evenings, and in November, we “fall back” to add more daylight in the mornings.
  • Is daylight saving time going away?
Efforts to eliminate the practice of changing clocks were presented to Congress in recent years. Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio of Florida are using the start of daylight saving time in 2024 to remind the country about the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act. This act aims to end the biannual time change and make daylight saving time permanent. Although the act was unanimously passed by the Senate in 2022, it did not pass the U.S. House of Representatives, and President Joe Biden did not sign it into law.
  • Do all states observe daylight saving time?
No, not all states observe daylight saving time. Hawaii, Arizona (excluding the Navajo Nation), American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not participate.

It’s important to note that the correct term is daylight “saving” time, not “savings” time. While the incorrect term “daylight savings time” is commonly used, especially in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

In summary, daylight saving time has begun for 2024, providing more daylight in the evenings. It will end on Sunday, November 3rd, giving us an extra hour of sleep. Despite efforts to eliminate it, daylight saving time continues, with some states and territories choosing not to observe it.
