Prime Minister Defends Peerage Decision Amid Claims Peer Withheld Information About Sex Offender Connections

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has come under intense scrutiny during parliamentary questioning after defending his decision to grant a peerage to his former communications director, claiming the peer failed to provide complete information about his connections to a convicted sex offender.

During the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session, Starmer acknowledged that he had subsequently expelled Lord Doyle from the Labour parliamentary group following revelations about the peer’s past associations.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch challenged the Prime Minister on his knowledge of Lord Doyle’s background during the appointment process, making serious allegations that Starmer was populating government positions with inappropriate individuals.

The controversy centers around Lord Doyle’s historical connection to Sean Morton, a former Labour councillor who pleaded guilty to charges related to indecent images of children in 2017. Lord Doyle has since expressed regret for his previous support of Morton.

The peerage announcement for Starmer’s former communications director was made in December of the previous year. However, by late December, media reports emerged revealing that Lord Doyle had actively supported Morton’s campaign even after the councillor faced charges for possessing and distributing illegal images in December 2016.

Government sources initially stated that concerns regarding Lord Doyle’s historical ties with Morton had been thoroughly examined through multiple interviews before his appointment was confirmed.

In January, nine opposition parliamentarians, headed by SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, submitted a formal motion in the House of Commons raising concerns about the appointment. Lord Doyle officially took his seat in the upper chamber on January 12th.

Earlier this week, Lord Doyle released a public statement acknowledging his error in judgment. He explained that Morton had consistently maintained his innocence to all acquaintances, including initial court appearances, but admitted that continuing support before judicial proceedings concluded was a significant mistake.

This controversy follows another appointment scandal involving Lord Mandelson’s selection as US ambassador, despite known connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Starmer has apologized to Epstein’s victims for accepting Mandelson’s misleading statements about the extent of his relationship with the disgraced financier.

The Prime Minister began the parliamentary session by defending his former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, who resigned over the weekend due to his role in advocating for Lord Mandelson’s appointment. Starmer acknowledged responsibility and apologized for his mistakes in the appointment process.

Badenoch accused the Prime Minister of deflecting blame onto others while avoiding personal accountability, emphasizing that the Mandelson situation was not an isolated incident. She questioned why Starmer proceeded with Lord Doyle’s peerage despite media reports about his connections to someone charged with child sex offenses.

In response, Starmer maintained that Lord Doyle had not provided a complete account of his actions and confirmed the removal of the party whip from the peer as part of promised changes to his administration.

The exchange grew increasingly heated as Badenoch suggested the Prime Minister was aware of the Sunday Times reporting but chose to proceed with the appointment regardless. She criticized Starmer for only expressing concern for victims when facing political pressure.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey also weighed in, describing Starmer’s appointments of both Lord Mandelson and Lord Doyle as demonstrating catastrophic judgment failures.

The Prime Minister defended his government’s record on addressing violence against women and girls while refusing to accept criticism from Conservative opponents, citing their previous support for austerity policies that he claimed had damaged the country.
